Normal Moments, Inc ...helping parents of children with critical illnesses share more normal moments every day.
|

While we love the wonderful wish-granting organizations out there, the reality is that when a child is in pain, scared, or just insecure, they never say “I want to go to Disney World”. The say “I want my Mommy” or “I need Daddy” and that is what we strive to give – the greatest gift of all, more quality time as a family during one of life’s worst challenges.
From our Normal Moments Family... "I just wanted to say that I so, so appreciate what you are doing for the families you help. Today I had chemo, which was followed by a trip to the ER for Katie. We were there until about 4:30 PM. The docs were able to pull the situation up so that Katie could avoid surgery, at least for the moment. We have so many crisis that we just could not manage if you hadn't turned your grief into something positive. Thank God for you."

The Beauty of Spring
Normal Moments and our families have been honored by the
support of so many individuals and companies who look out for the day to day
needs of parents dealing with the long-term battles of critical illness and/or
medically complex children. Sometimes,
however, our families need more than basic maintenance. Over the past few weeks, the beauty of newly
blooming trees and flowers was eclipsed by the beauty of a few groups of people
who stepped up to help do yard clean-up and improvement for our families.
Teams formed by the American Subcontractor’s Association of
Chicago were the first to head out. They
met with each of the families they assisted in advance to determine the exact
needs of each household. Team members
not only donated their time, but also gave a financial donation to purchase
plants, mulch, bricks, and more to complete the desired tasks. Each team spent
most of a day with their family and some developed a plan for return trips to
add more plants or continue assisting.
We have a church group team who have not only volunteered as
“Davids”, but also chose to go out and help with a spring clean up. They had a big job and did great. They worked with their own contacts to get
materials donated or offered at reduced rate.
They had their families involved and I believe everyone felt fulfilled
at the end of the day.
Our families are so grateful when people step up to help
with projects like this and it is a great way for families to work
together. If your family, your neighborhood
group, your company, your religious sub-group, your friends, etc. want to spend
a day or two helping Normal Moments, just let us know. We’ll find a project for you!
Here’s some direct quotes from both volunteers and
recipients from the Spring Clean Up project so far:
“I also wanted to add our appreciation! I think
Chuck and I were caught a little off guard as to what they could all
accomplish. So we were probably a little disorganized for them! LOL! But they
did some great work for us. It was those little things that we wanted to get
down, and might eventually, but it wasn't high on our list. So now we have some
really nice work done outside our house!
And thank you again for the cleaning crew that came earlier in the month. It
was so nice to have the house cleaned like that. Again, those are the things
that we "CAN" do, but sometimes we just don't "WANT" to do!
We get so mentally exhausted every day. So thank you again for all of that!!” ~Cindy
“All
the participants met the families and the children and found it a very
rewarding
experience. All agreed to recommend doing it again next year.”
~ASA-Chicago Meeting Minutes
“Hi, Kim and her
family and some friends came out and did the yard today. It is beautiful. They
planted some bushes ,flowering grass and a tree. and then new mulch. It is so
much more then I expected. and just beautiful. Kim said she went to buy all the
bushes and other things and told the man at the landscaping place what she was
doing and he donated all the plants and grass . Also the man that cuts are
grass knocked on the door today. he thanked me for letting him cut my grass. He
said it is a blessing for him and his wife to be able to help the normal
moments families. I told him how much it meant to us and how much it helped and
that it allowed me to have the weekends with the kids and to not have to worry
about getting it cut. He said he never thought about it that way or thought it
was that important. He is very nice. Thank you for all your help.”

Tricia's Story: March 29, 2007 As
I write this, my 16 year old daughter, Melissa, is asleep in her bed,
slowly dying of relapse osteosarcoma with bilateral lung nodules; in
other words, nasty cancer that we have been unable to cure. She was
diagnosed August 22, 2005. For her 17th
birthday gift, my daughter asked for me to get a tattoo of the Chinese
character for hope. She is not likely to be here for that birthday, so
as strange as the request was, I gave her that gift recently. I think
she wanted to make sure that even after she is gone, it is impossible
for me to lose hope....read more...
David's Story: The unique
part of service as a ‘David’ volunteer is that there are no grand,
dramatic gestures. It is the small daily chores that parents take for
granted until their child is debilitated in a hospital and they have to
choose between spending time dealing with trash day, the mail, and
pets, and spending time and energy caring for their child...read more...
Sheryl's Story: My adult son
suffered a severe stroke at the age of 41 in New York City. He was not
discovered for 7 days and near death when I received the call in
Chicago. With struggle and determination, amazingly (now 7 years later)
he has recovered enough to lead a changed life with some handicaps but
nevertheless fortunate to live an independent life. For over a year I
spent 3 or 4 days a week in Manhattan (while also running my business
in Chicago). When not in New York, I had to rely on staff in the
hospitals and rehab facilities who hopefully cared enough to follow my
wishes and treat my son kindly. I know for a fact that this was not
always the case....read more...
Meaghan's Story: My brother and sister,
Johnny and Shannon, and I were beautiful, healthy babies who shared
every moment of our childhood together until September 12, 1986. That
day I remember waking in the middle of the night to find Johnny on the
bathroom floor, shaking violently and making strange noises. Shannon
and I understood only the fear in our parents’ eyes and later learned
that our brother had been having a grand mal seizure for many hours
during the night. He was diagnosed with encephalitis which doctors
believe he got from a mosquito carrying the virus and sustained severe
brain damage. This tragedy left an indelible mark on my life, and
listening to doctors and waiting in hospitals replaced riding bicycles
and playing in the backyard....read more...
Christina's Story: In April
2007, David first told me the story of Melissa and about Normal
Moments. I was touched, not only by Melissa and Tricia’s story, but
also by what David was able to do for them. David’s story gave me such
inspiration and helped me remember what my mother had taught me – that
the greatest gift one could give is his or her own time to others.
Since then, I have been inspired over and over by what Normal Moments
does for those in need. I want to honor the memory of those I love by
giving to others. I can find the joy that comes from helping others...read more...
